Six beaches along the Southern Maine coast — four of them in Kennebunk, Wells and Ogunquit — are among the top 10 beaches that most frequently failed water quality tests in 2011.
The information was released last week by Environment Maine, which is calling on the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to better inform the public when pollution levels violate the state’s own health standard.
“Clean beaches are not only part of summertime fun, but they are also critical to our health, as well as to Maine’s tourism and fishing economies,” said Environment Maine director Emily Figdor. “The public has a right to know when the water is safe and clean and when it’s not.”
