Call it food safety to take away.
A new application available for download is topping the medical category of the App Store soon after its release.
The China Survival Manual contains information on thousands of food safety scandals and updated warnings under 12 categories including health and nutrition, dairy and beverages.
It has been downloaded more than 200,000 times since its release on May 24, according to Shen Xi, a media relations staff at Kingsoft, developer of the application.
“It is high time we compiled information pertaining to food security scandals and inform the public of the potential hazard,” she said. “However, the most important thing is to provide solutions to the public when a new scandal is exposed.”

In a newly released clinical study conducted in India, hundreds of seriously ill infants who received zinc – an essential micronutrient for the immune system and human growth – as well as antibiotics, responded better and more quickly to treatment than those who did not. This finding is the first proof that zinc supplements may boost infant survival from infections.
“It does not need to be serious zinc deficiency. Even mild deficiency can compromise a child’s immunity,” the study’s lead investigator, Shinjini Bhatnagar, of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, told IRIN. The infants’ weak immune systems, among other reasons, can lead to first-line treatments not working.
More than 300 infants no older than 120 days (4 months), hospitalized in New Delhi, the capital, for suspected meningitis (an infection of the brain or spinal cord lining), pneumonia (a lung infection) or sepsis (blood poisoning), were given zinc in addition to antibiotics.

Here’s the latest in how air pollution and chemical exposures are linked to allergies, autism and asthma, three particularly vexing health problems that are fueled by air pollution and increasing rapidly in children.
Allergies:
Are your allergies bad this year? Turns out you are not alone. Many health experts are pointing to climate change making allergies worse for many people. A combination of a warm winter and an early spring, have brought out more pollens much earlier in the year. According to Leonard Bielory, an allergy specialist with the Rutgers Center of Environmental Prediction, and an attending physician at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Allergy and Immunology.

Don’t just think outside of the box, get outside of the box.
Those four walls are causing nature deficit disorder, damaging brain functioning and overall well-being, say experts. Wake up to the wilderness and boost your brain with nature’s restorative qualities, including increased health, happiness and vitality.
Nature rocks! Grass stains rule. Rain-drenched hair is good for you. Getting green time promotes positive emotions and energy, feeding the soul and natural curiosity — something technology can’t do.
Our tech-addicted culture is at risk of obesity, anxiety and depression, along with cognitive and behavioural difficulties, experts say.

Arab states could be headed towards a future war over water if they do not act quickly to tackle shortages, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has warned.
At a conference in Baghdad, he urged countries to work together in order to prevent conflict in the arid region.
Issues include desertification, poor water management, and the need for most Arab countries to rely on the goodwill of upstream states for river water.
Arab countries are seeking to address the water crisis with a unified plan.

With her hair in a ponytail and her smile quick and wide, it’s hard to tell that high school junior Donyell Hollins has been pulling all-nighters for most of the semester to take care of her infant daughter.
Her situation isn’t unusual in the small Delta town of Marks, home to one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the state that leads the nation in the statistic. But unlike teen mothers in previous decades, 18-year-old Hollins is benefiting from a change in attitude that’s paving the way for frank discussions about parenting skills, career goals and contraception.

Children with poor hygiene practices are more likely to suffer in terms of academic performance, a study by the Indian Medical Academy said here Wednesday.
Conducted among 500 parents and 540 doctors, the participants were divided into two groups – those who scored above 80 percent marks with over 80 percent attendance (group A) and those who scored below 80 percent with less than 80 percent attendance (group B).
“In group B, only 43 percent students studied more than three hours in contrast to group A, where 63 percent of whom studied over three hours a day. It was found that in group A, 37 percent students ate healthy food, 88 percent bathed daily, and 67 percent washed their hands regularly,” the study said.

With more families eating fresher, rawer and less-processed food to maintain nutrition, it is vital they crack down on hygiene and storage and are aware of the food poisoning traps that come with a new healthy diet, according to a food safety expert.
Juliana Madden, the Food Safety Information Council’s executive director, said that kicking the “cooking food within an inch of its life” habit of past generations and turning to salads, stir-fry and sushi had been a positive step but it required greater vigilance in preparation.
The trade-off had been that fewer foods were now subjected to prolonged heat above 60C that would kill bacterial and other contamination.

What portion of the money that you spend on health insurance premiums goes toward paying for your medical care? Until recently, it’s been almost impossible for consumers to know how much of their premiums have gone to health services, as opposed to administrative costs and corporate profits.
That will change, starting Friday, with the arrival of an Obama administration deadline for major health insurance companies to reveal how much money they spent on medical claims last year. Consumers can check their insurers’ reports here after June 1.
